It is clear that in the current South African, African, and Global economic terrain the creation of jobs is and will continue to become harder and harder. This is not because people do not want to create jobs, but simply because the world has changed.

We are no longer in the Industrial age, we are now in the information and technology age. However, this does not mean the end of opportunities. In fact, it probably means that there are even more opportunities, but it all depends on whether or not you find them.

Through the school and education process, the majority of people have been conditioned to believe that jobs create money. In reality that is not true. Businesses and Entrepreneurs create money. While jobs will become harder to find, what is not harder to find are problems to solve.

Businesses result from problems, and the more problems there are, the more opportunities exist to build businesses and entrepreneurs.

If we are to change the economic landscape of our country and continent, I believe we need to change the way we teach and build entrepreneurs. A focus on purely skills and knowledge development will not do the job. In order to create the change required it is essential that the initial change in learning comes from an emotional and spiritual basis. A change in heart. A change in context.

The Current Mindset

Most people are raised on the following principles around education and wealth creation.

Go to school, study hard, get a good education, that will give you a good job that pays well. Then you will need to work harder to get promoted, earn more money, save money through a passive asset process (RA’s Pension funds etc.) and when you get to retirement age (60/65) you will be fine. Sound familiar? How many people is this model working for in this day and age? If we are truly honest with ourselves, then the answer is very, very few.

If we keep doing the same thing, we will keep getting the same results… People with degrees and high levels of education who cannot find employment and do not have the right mindset to build their own businesses. Note: I have said “mindset” not education. Why? Because it is mindset that enables an entrepreneur to succeed and not knowledge or skill. When a person changes the way they think, they will seek to find the required knowledge and skill to enable them to enhance their new mindset.

There are 4 fundamental levels to learning:

  • Mental
  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual

The Mental and Physical stages of learning are what is focused on at schools and universities. Many companies focus on these areas as well. You will hear things like you need another piece of paper, or you need to upskill yourself in order to go to the next level. How many highly educated people do we have who lack the emotional stability to create something different? While skill is important, without the right Emotional development it is often useless.

Emotional and Spiritual Learning is really where people become equipped. When you change the way you can deal with conflict, tough situations, failure, through emotional development, and when you start focusing on building a better world for others rather than being self-focused, that is when things will really change. When an individual develops emotionally and spiritually they will seek the knowledge and skills required to achieve their mission. This is generally not true for individuals who focus on Mental and Physical development, what they will tend to do is defend the knowledge and skills they have and not seek to change emotionally or spiritually.
